BHCA Zoning & Licensing Committee Reviewing 3 Proposals

The Beacon Hill Civic Association (BHCA) Zoning & Licensing Committee is reviewing three proposals tomorrow.  One is for an outdoor cafe at Starbucks on Cambridge Street. The other is for a single story addition to 139 Charles St. and the third is for a massive expansion of the MEEI campus at Charles Circle.

Starbucks is interested in a 12-seat sidewalk dining area at the corner of Cambridge Street and Irving Street.  It would extend 9 feet from the building facade and would leave a 4-foot-wide sidewalk for room to walk.  I think it’ll get passed because many other cafes/restaurants on that same block and street have outdoor capabilities.  Would be a nice addition to this already busy Starbucks.  City’s biggest fear is the trash problem.

139 Charles Street, home to three apartments and a UPS store has submitted plans to build a one story addition to this building, measuring 18 by 28 feet. It would help create an extra 500 sq. ft. of commercial space on the ground level.  Inspectional Service Department has already refused the project because of zoning violations.  The Board has appealed it and they will continue to review the proposal.

The Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary (MEEI) hospital has plans to build a new research facility will replace three standing buildings located on the North side of Cambridge Street between the Yawkey Center & the Liberty Hotel.  They also intend on building a new office building on Charles Street, where there is currently a parking lot, which is between Savenor’s Market & John Jefferies House.  These are very large plans for MEEI, but I think they will be beneficial to its employees and patients.

This meeting will take place at the Hill House at 74 Joy Street in Beacon Hill tomorrow (Wednesday, May 5th) at 7:30PM.  If you’re unable to attend there is a phone number to call for any opinions or further questions.  (617) 227-1922.
